Massachusetts U.S. Senate — 2026 General Election: All Funding
John Deaton (R) vs. Ed Markey (D) · general election November 3, 2026
Last updated October 8, 2026, 5:18 PM ET
Data current through: independent expenditures latest FEC-processed and 24-hour filings · campaign finances August 12, 2026 · super PAC donors —*
Scope: money deployed in the general election — independent expenditures disseminated after the September 1, 2026 primaries, once both nominees were set. $3,372,012 of independent expenditures disseminated on or before primary day is primary-period spending: kept out of the general-election totals and two-way tables, listed by committee in the appendix at the bottom of this page (§7.15) — see scope note. Campaign finances are cycle-to-date as reported to the FEC.
7.1 — Race summary
| Candidate | Raised | Spent | Cash on hand | Outside $ supporting | Outside $ opposing | Total outside benefiting | Grand total benefiting |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John Deaton (R) | $1,561,360 | $848,943 | $712,417 | $0 | $0 | $0 | $848,943 |
| Ed Markey (D) | $5,352,148 | $5,814,159 | $1,348,676 | $0 | $0 | $0 | $5,814,159 |
| Total | $6,913,509 | $6,663,102 | $2,061,093 | $0 | $0 | $0 | $6,663,102 |
Every cell to the dollar. Raised / Spent / Cash on hand are each campaign's cycle-to-date FEC totals (they include primary-period activity — note); the three outside-money columns count only independent expenditures disseminated after primary day. "Grand total benefiting" = a candidate's own campaign disbursements + total outside spending benefiting that candidate. Receipts and expenditures are never added into a single figure. Attribution rule.

7.8 — PACs giving directly to each campaign
John Deaton (R)
| PAC | Amount | Date(s) |

| Steer PAC | $5,000 | 07/15/2026 |
| Total (1) | $5,000 |
Ed Markey (D)
Cash and in-kind contributions from PACs and other political committees to each campaign, cycle-to-date (FEC transaction types 24K and 24Z in the committee-to-candidate bulk file, memo entries excluded). The candidate's own authorized committees are left out — their transfers are the "transfers from authorized committees" line in §7.6. Independent expenditures (types 24A/24E) are never counted here; they appear only in the §7.3 ledger.
Also in this FEC file, shown elsewhere on this page
- $18,007 of independent expenditures (types 24E for, 24A against) — outside spending: rows disseminated after primary day are in the §7.3 ledger and the totals above, primary-period rows are in the §7.15 appendix. $90 of it, from 2 committee(s) that report IEs only on their regular reports and never appear in the FEC independent-expenditure file, was added from this file so it is not lost ($90 in the §7.15 appendix (primary period)).
7.9 — Earmarked contributions via conduits
John Deaton (R)
No AIPAC PAC earmarks to this campaign in the filings processed for this snapshot.
Ed Markey (D)
No AIPAC PAC earmarks to this campaign in the filings processed for this snapshot.
Both campaigns are checked the same way against AIPAC PAC's own itemized receipts (each earmark names the recipient committee). AIPAC PAC reports disclosed through August 31, 2026. This is an overlay statistic showing the conduit path of money already counted in §7.6 receipts; it is not added to any other total. AIPAC PAC contributions earmarked to a candidate pass through the traditional PAC as a conduit. ActBlue is a payment processor, mechanically different from an ideological bundler; no ActBlue conduit activity was observed in the current filings.
7.9b — AIPAC PAC-network donors among itemized contributors
John Deaton (R)
- Match tier: name + ZIP 1 donors ($1,000); name + state only 1 donors ($1,414). 0 matched donors list the identical employer string on both sides.
- Residence: MA 0 donors ($0); out of state 2 donors ($2,414).
- Amounts are net of 8 negative Schedule A adjustment line(s) (chargebacks and reversals, $7,156); 0 identities whose contributions were fully reversed are not counted. The FEC candidate summary shows no refunds to individuals for the cycle.
- No transfers in from joint fundraising or other authorized committees in these reports.
- Itemized receipts through August 12, 2026 (C00926139: 799 itemized lines).

What this measures: donor overlap, not direction. Each nominee's itemized individual receipts (Schedule A, individuals only, memo entries excluded, net of the negative adjustment lines campaigns file to reverse excessive contributions) are compared with the people named in AIPAC PAC's own regular reports from January 1, 2023 through August 31, 2026 (44 reports, 94,231 individual receipt lines, 18,211 distinct donors — direct PAC contributions and earmarks to any candidate alike). Donors are grouped, and chargebacks netted, at the level of surname + first given name + ZIP code on both sides; a donor matches when that ZIP-level identity appears in both ("name + ZIP"). Only when it does not is a weaker fallback tried: the same surname and first name anywhere in the same state, compared against the combined receipts of everyone with that name in the state ("name + state" — several people can share a name, so this tier is reported separately). Both nominees are run through the identical procedure, so the opponent's block shows what the same method yields on the other donor list; it is a comparison, not a measured error rate. A match shows that a person who gave to this campaign also gave to or through AIPAC PAC; it does not show that AIPAC PAC raised, hosted or directed the contribution, which FEC data cannot establish (see the §7.9 earmark blocks for money that verifiably passed through the PAC). Only contributions itemized by the campaign ($200+ aggregate) can be matched; unitemized receipts are invisible to this method, and so are donors whose money arrived as a joint-fundraising-committee transfer (each block states that amount). Every matched donor is in the matched-donor CSV. Method note.

7.14 — Sources & methodology
Sources
All figures derive from filings with the Federal Election Commission. Committee filings: National Association Of Realtors Political Action Committee · Sierra Club Independent Action · Senate Leadership Fund (SLF PAC) · Americans for Prosperity Action (AFP Action) · NRDC Action Votes · Defend The Vote · United Democracy Project (UDP) · Givegreen United Action · WinSenate · Advance Progress.
Deduplication
The same expenditure can appear up to three times — as a raw electronic-filing row, as a 24/48-hour notice (Form 24 / Form 5), and re-itemized later in a committee's regular periodic report (Form 3X), with amendments adding further copies. To avoid overstating totals, amendment chains are collapsed; then, per committee, the authoritative ledger keeps non-notice rows disseminated on or before the coverage-end date of the committee's latest filed regular report, plus notice rows disseminated after that date. Memo entries are excluded from all sums.
Attribution rule
Spending that opposes one candidate is counted as benefiting the other. Benefiting a candidate = independent expenditures supporting that candidate + independent expenditures opposing the opponent. Electioneering communications and communication costs are listed separately in §7.12 and are not added to these totals. The rule applies only to spending disseminated after primary day, once both nominees were set; see the scope note below.
FEC-reported expenditures only — no ad-tracker reservations included.
Donor-network cross-match (§7.9b)
Identity key: surname letters (suffixes such as Jr./III dropped) plus the first given-name token (honorifics dropped), then ZIP5 (preferred) or state. Nominee side: the FEC's processed individual-contribution file for the 2026 cycle (every authorized committee's Schedule A individual lines as itemized on its regular Form 3 reports; memo entries and non-individual entities excluded; the FEC's processed data reflects the latest amendment of each report). Network side: AIPAC PAC's regular Form 3X reports covering January 1, 2023 through August 31, 2026 (44 reports, 18,211 distinct donor identities), including earmarks to every candidate and direct PAC contributions. Result: John Deaton (R) 2 matched donors, $2,414 (0.6% of itemized individual receipts through August 12, 2026); Ed Markey (D) 3 matched donors, $19,000 (1.2% of itemized individual receipts through August 12, 2026). Reading: an overlap of donors, reported as a descriptive statistic and kept out of every total. It is not evidence that AIPAC PAC solicited or bundled the money — the FEC record shows conduit passage only through the earmarks in §7.9 and through lobbyist-bundler reports (Form 3L; none filed by John Deaton's committees; Ed Markey's committees have filed 9 such reports). Known limits: common names in the same ZIP can collide (the opponent's block is the empirical control); donors who list different name spellings or addresses on the two sides are missed; unitemized contributions cannot be matched; amounts are net of negative Schedule A adjustment lines but refunds disbursed on Schedule B, where present, are not netted.
Independent expenditures that named other Massachusetts U.S. Senate candidates this cycle — candidates eliminated in or absent from the September 1, 2026 primaries, or running outside the two-way matchup: Seth Moulton (23 rows, $4,488,304) — are not attributable under the two-way rule. 23 expenditure(s) totaling $4,488,304 that targeted only them are excluded from the two-way accounting above; they are itemized, row by row, under excludedOtherTargets in the full snapshot JSON (§7.13).
Scope: general election only
This page covers the general election, November 3, 2026, between the two nominees set by the September 1, 2026 primaries. Independent expenditures naming either nominee but disseminated on or before primary day — 14 filing row(s) totaling $3,372,012 as of October 8, 2026 — are primary-period spending: they are kept out of the general-election totals and two-way tables and are not credited to either nominee (before primary day each was running against different opponents, so "opposing one benefits the other" does not hold). Largest primary-period spenders: Advance Progress $3,329,005 (opposing Markey); NRDC Action Votes $25,000 (supporting Markey); National Association Of Realtors Political Action Committee $17,917 (supporting Markey). They are listed by committee in the appendix at the bottom of this page (§7.15), and every row is in the primary-period ledger CSV (and under prePrimary in the full snapshot JSON, §7.13). The general-election window has no upper cutoff: everything disseminated after primary day counts, through election day and any post-election filings. Date basis: 2 row(s) totaling $90 carry no dissemination date in the FEC file and are placed by their expenditure or transaction date instead (0 row(s), $0, fall after primary day; 2 row(s), $90, on or before it). None of them falls within 7 days of primary day. Every ledger row states its date basis in the CSV (date_basis column).
Disclosure gaps
- Campaign finances (§7.1 Raised / Spent / Cash on hand, §7.6, §7.7, §7.8) are each principal committee's cycle-to-date totals through August 12, 2026: the FEC candidate summary file does not separate primary-period from general-election receipts and disbursements, so those figures include the primaries and stop before primary day. Activity after August 12, 2026 first appears in the October 15 quarterly report, covering through September 30.
- Super PAC donor lists run through each committee's latest filed report (per-committee cutoffs below). Independent expenditures themselves are reported within 24 or 48 hours and are current well ahead of the donor lists.
- National committees (NRDC Action Votes, National Association Of Realtors Political Action Committee, Senate Leadership Fund, Americans for Prosperity Action, WinSenate, Defend The Vote, United Democracy Project) raise for many races; their donor tables are cycle-wide, all races, and cannot be attributed to Massachusetts specifically.
Super PAC donor disclosure cutoffs (per committee)
- —
Labeling is strictly neutral throughout, with identical footnote treatment for both sides' funding structures. Committees that raise nationally are described identically whichever nominee they support.

Independent expenditures naming John Deaton or Ed Markey and disseminated on or before the September 1, 2026 primaries, from filings processed through October 8, 2026 (14 filing rows; every row is in the primary-period ledger CSV and under prePrimary in the full snapshot JSON, §7.13). This is primary-period money: it is listed in full here but is not added to the general-election totals above and is not credited to either nominee, because "opposing one candidate benefits the other" only holds once both are on the same ballot — before primary day each nominee was running against different opponents. Scope note.
